About this position
Under general direction, the Carpenter Supervisor I supervises the activities of carpenters and other craft workers engaged in the maintenance and repair of city structures, historic buildings, installations, facilities and equipment, including transit equipment, both in shops and on-site.

What you will be doing

  • Planning and prioritizing work schedules on a continuous basis according to production targets.
  • Assigning and directing the work of carpenters and others on maintenance and repair projects.
  • Scheduling and coordinating work with other crafts and departments.
  • Making estimates of time and materials on requested work orders for repairs and maintenance.
  • Inspecting work in progress and, upon completion, inspecting for quality and adherence to specifications.
  • Developing work schedules and plans.
  • Requisitioning materials and equipment.
  • Justifying and estimating future equipment and material needs.
  • Recording staff hours worked and making required reports.
  • Instructing employees in the safe operation of shop equipment and assuring adherence to safe work practices.
  • Administering the Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP).
  • Assisting in the development, motivation and advancement of employees through training and effective use of employee development programs.
  • Administering performance appraisals.
  • Resolving employee problems.
  • Assuring adherence to shop rules, policies, etc.
  • Working in conjunction with support staff, including engineers, architects and other technical experts to coordinate work plans.
  • Making regular contacts with other departments, outside organizations and the general public.
  • Using a personal computer and maintenance management software to prepare a variety of reports and memos, to keep records, and to write correspondence using e-mail.
  • May perform carpenter duties if necessary as well as other related duties as required.

Note: This position requires the ability to work in inclement weather; in some cases to work mandatory overtime, swing or graveyard shifts, weekends and holidays; and possible exposure to hazardous conditions found in and around buildings, structures or constructions sites.

Minimum Qualifications

If you are interested in a job like this, we are looking for people that have the following:

  1. Completion of a four year recognized carpenter apprenticeship program; AND
  2. Four years of verifiable experience as a journey-level carpenter (experience as a carpenter’s helper is NOT qualifying.); AND
  3. Possession of a valid California driver’s license.

Substitution
Additional qualifying journey-level carpenter experience may be substituted for the required carpentry apprenticeship program on a year-for-year basis.

Note: Experience claimed in self-employment will only be considered if supported by evidence of earnings and duties comparable to this position. Copies of income tax papers listing occupation and total earnings will be required to document self-employment.
